8th Annual All-Star Classic
August 22, 1997

Despite the cool, damp weather--which included a couple of downpours early in the evening--about 200 people showed up at Streetsville Memorial Park in Mississauga to take in the 8th Annual Mississauga Fastball League All Star Classic on Friday August 22.

Featuring two womens teams for the first time ever, the crowd was entertained by a well-played, competitive game between the Mississauga McCallion Women's Softball League All-Stars--an eight-team women's league in Mississauga--and the Peel-Halton Midget All-Stars--featuring players from Burlington, Georgetown, Cawthra and Milton.

The Midgets took an early 1-0 lead and increased it to 3-1 before the McCallions, decked out in special black all-star uniforms, came back to tie it. Due to a late start because of the rain, there was no time for extra innings and the game ended in a 3-3 tie.

Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion was on hand to throw out the first pitch and Rogers Cable 10 had a crew at the game to record hilites.

Game MVPs were for the Peel-Halton Midget All-Stars, pitcher Janis McKay of Burlington, and for the Mississauga McCallion Women's Softball League All-Stars, catcher Pam Robson of Flamingo Printing.

The second game of the doubleheader featured the Burlington Fastball League All-Stars taking on the host Mississauga Fastball League All-Stars. The two leagues have played a limited interlocking schedule this season and pride and bragging rights were on the line.

Burlington jumped out in front 1-0 in the top of the first, but Mississauga knotted the score at 1-1 in the home half of the inning.

It stayed that way until the fourth when Burlington combined four hits and a walk for three runs to provide them with the 4-1 margin of victory.

Game MVPs were Neil Curtis for Burlington from the Palermo Athletics and Guy Levesque for Mississauga from the Re/Max Chiefs.

The winning pitcher was Dwayne Curtis of Philthy McNasty's in relief of Glen Inglehart of Palermo. Also pitching for Burlington was Tim Lamers of Palermo. Losing pitching was Lyle Reynolds of Streetsville Sports. Also pitching for Mississauga was Billy Stewart of the Brewers and Mike Broussard of the Steelers.

Special thanks to event sponsor Labatt and territory manager Ian Ferguson for their support of the MFL all season long.
