The Mississauga Fastball League honoured
its finest November 8th at its annual awards
banquet held at the Burnhamthorpe Community
Centre. The awards were presented by 1997
MFL President David Bakker and 1997 MFL Secretary
Blair Setford.
Bill Stewart of the Brampton Brewers
was
named the 1997 Most Valuable Player.
Stewart
led the Brewers to a first-place overall
standing during the regular season,
topping
his team in hits, home runs and batting
average,
as well as being one of the top pitchers
in the league. Stewart represented
the MFL
in the all-star exhibition in July
against
the ISC World Champion Tampa Bay Smokers
and in the MFL all-star game against
the
Burlington Fastball League all-stars.

1997 MFL Most Valuable Player
Greg Edwards of the Mississauga Mudcats was
selected the 1997 Most Valuable Pitcher.
Edwards was the top pitcher on the Mudcats,
the defending MFL champions, leading them
to a second-place overall finish during the
regular season. He was also the MVP for the
MFL in the exhibition against the Tampa Bay
Smokers.

1997 MFL Most Valuable Pitcher
Tom Fortune and Matt Barry of the 1997 MFL
Champion Mississauga Re/Max Chiefs shared
the 1997 Playoff Most Valuable Player award.
Fortune caught every inning the Chiefs played
in the playoffs, playing superb defence.
He also contributed with his bat, hitting
.333 in the finals. Barry played a flawless
shortstop for the Chiefs throughout the playoffs,
including making several outstanding plays.
He was also a threat at the plate with several
key hits, including a game winning solo home
run in game two of the finals.
Tom Fortune
1997 MFL Playoff Co-Most Valuable Player
Guy Levesque of the Mississauga Re/Max Chiefs
was the 1997 All-Star Game MVP. Levesque
was tabbed for outstanding defence in the
MFL's 4-1 loss to the Burlington All-Stars,
making numerous fine catches and throwing
out a runner at third base from right field.
Levesque also played in the exhibition against
Tampa Bay.
Blair Setford recipient of the Hazel McCallion
Sportsmanship and Dedication Award for outstanding
service to the MFL.

The Brampton Brewers were presented with
the 1997 Season Championship Trophy for their
first place finish in the regular season.
The Mississauga Re/Max Chiefs were
presented
with the 1997 Playoff Championship
Trophy
for their three-game sweep of the Brampton
Brewers in the finals. Accepting the
trophy
on behalf of the Chiefs was Ed Pupulin.
