1998 MFL Awards

Ron Rosengren of the Mudcats, Rich Miaskowski Sr. of the Brewers and Palermo's Tim Lamers were the individual award winners at the 1998 MFL Awards Banquet held Oct. 16.

Rosengren took home the Most Valuable Player Award in his first year in the league. The power-hitting outfielder topped the second-place Mississauga Mudcats in homeruns and was a threat every time he came to the plate. Rosengren led the Mudcats to a second-place finish during the regular season. In the playoffs, he took the Mudcats to the league finals, hitting three grand slams along the way.

The Brampton Brewers' Rich Miaskowski Sr. adds the MFL Most Valuable Pitcher Award to his long list of accomplishments. Miaskowski Sr. won the majority of the games for the Brewers this year. He represented the MFL in the all-star game against the Tampa Bay Smokers. Miaskowski started game one, going three innings against the 1998 ISC champs and gave up only one run. Senior was injured in a tournament on Labour Day and was unable to participate in the playoffs.

Tim Lamers
1998 MFL Playoff Most Valuable Player

Tim Lamers, pitcher for 1998 MFL Champion Burlington Palermo, was voted the Playoff Most Valuable Player. Lamers, who led Palermo to a first-place overall finish during the regular season, finished the playoffs with a 4-2 record with one save. He clinched the championship for Palermo with a convincing 3-1 over the Mudcats. Lamers was also an MFL all-star selection, pitching two innings against Tampa Bay.

The Mississauga Chiefs' Duncan Kosziwka was the 1998 MFL All-Star MVP. Kosziwka represented the league in game two of the doubleheader against the Tampa Bay Smokers. He ripped a solo home run off Smokers' pitcher Chris Wilson to gave the MFL All-Stars a brief 2-1 lead. Kosziwka received a commemorative Toronto Blue Jays pin set in a ceremony after the game.

David Bakker, of the Mississauga Chiefs, was presented with the Hazel McCallion Sportsmanship and Dedication Award. Bakker was MFL president in 1996 and 1997 and organized the inaugural all-star exhibition against the Tampa Bay Smokers, significantly raising the MFL's profile in the community. This year was his last in the league after accepting a new job in Chatham. He leaves having won the Most Valuable Pitcher and Playoff Most Valuable Player award during his 8-year career in the MFL.

Palermo Athletics, which won the OASA Rec "A" championship in August, took home both the 1998 MFL Regular Season Championship trophy and the 1998 MFL Playoff Championship trophy, the first team to end the season on top and win the playoffs since 1993. Palermo finished the season with a 20-6-2 record. In the playoffs, they beat the Brampton Steelers two straight and then edged the Brampton Brewers three games to two with a thrilling come-from-behind victory in game five of the semi-finals. In the final, Palermo dropped game one to the Mississauga Mudcats  before roaring back with three straight victories to win the championship.  With the win, Palermo claimed a "AA" berth in the 1999 NAFA World Series in Albuquerque, NM. Accepting the hardware on behalf of Palermo was Larry Withnell.
